Absolutely! I’ve gotten to know a lot of authors from reviewing books, and I follow their social media. Two of them especially became dear friends. You know who you are, Gail and Louise! You can learn more about these wonderful authors by clicking on their name.

If I review a book I especially like, I keep track of the author on social media so I can request their next book.

I also see a lot of poignant posts on author sites. Liz Gauffreau wrote a book review yesterday that blew me away. Joy Neal Kidney provides fascinating posts about the history of Iowa and her family. They are also both fantastic authors. There are so many others whose posts I follow and enjoy.

I also help promote them by retweeting, sharing, etc. That is part of making my page a community of writers, reviewers, and readers who support each other.

I just met my Goodreads Challenge of 200 books for the year. Not all of those books were from Netgalley. I’m at 120 on Netgalley for the year. That takes me to 467 Netgalley books reviewed since I started on Netgalley in late 2019. I’m only 33 books away from my 500 reviews badge, so that’s exciting! I should get that in early 2023.

The Goodreads counts are not as difficult as they sound. They include re-reads and shorter books.

I’m not expecting any books under the tree. I get so many books all year as a blogger that I don’t usually ask for books. There are a few on my radar that I will buy myself eventually, but I don’t usually put books on the Christmas list. My favorite author, Jodi Taylor, always releases a short story on Christmas Day, and I have that preordered, so I’m very much looking forward to reading that. That has become part of my Christmas Day tradition for several years now.

I don’t have a reading nook. My favorite place to read is in bed, but I find myself falling asleep very quickly, so I usually read on my couch.

I also love to listen to audiobooks in the car while I’m driving.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION

Most of the time, no. But there is an exception. When Jodi Taylor comes out with a new book in her St. Mary’s Chronicles or Time Police series, I will listen to at least one book prior on Audible. I also re-listen to the entire series at least every couple of years. It’s like visiting old friends.

Book Blogger Hop

My review writing changed somewhat in late 2019 or early 2020. Back then I was only reviewing on Goodreads and Amazon, but I joined the Historical Novel Society and contacted them about doing reviews for their magazine. They looked at some of my Goodreads reviews and accepted me, but it was then that I learned that print magazines only have so much space, and I would have to limit all of my reviews to 300 words, and some of them to 200 or 250. After a couple of years of doing that, I almost always write in the style they require, which is a short synopsis of the book followed by an honest and interesting review. The whole finished product can be no more than 300 words. I’m quite comfortable with that style now. So I would say my reviews are on the shorter side compared with some other bloggers out there.

Either one is fine with me. Voracious reader means you have an appetite for books, or want a lot of books, so that sounds more appropriate for me. Book nerds might refer to more intellectual or technical books, so I would say voracious reader fits better.

Yes, all the time! Every review I do has a rating and buy links, so in that way I’m recommending the author to my readers. And every author is new to someone. On the weekend, I do reviews and spotlights of Indie books so I can introduce Indie authors to more readers. So yes, I recommend very often!

It depends on what you mean by “local bookstore.” We have a Barnes and Noble in Johnson City, TN, and of course it has all the new books. If “local bookstore” means a locally owned shop, then the answer is not really. We have a wonderfully old and dusty Moody Bookstore which isn’t even fully lighted and I can wander into darkened shelves and find some interesting old books. I enjoy those expeditions very much.

My second hometown, Bryson City, has a bookstore owned by the local library where they sell extra books and donated books, and proceeds benefit the library. They sometimes have new books. I would like to donate some of my ARCs to them, but they all say “not for resale” so I’m not sure if I can.
