Book Blogger Hop: Favorite book review websites

The first iteration of the Book Blogger Hop, which was started in March 2010 by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books, ended on December 31, 2012. On February 15, 2013, Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer reintroduced the hop with Jennifer’s approval. The hop will begin on a Friday of each week and end on a Thursday of the following week. Every week, there will be a prompt with a book-related query. The aim of the blog hop is to provide bloggers with an opportunity to follow other blogs, discover new books, make friends with other bloggers, and gain new followers for their own sites.

This is an easy one! It’s the websites of all my blogger and author friends on here who write such great reviews and make recommendations. I still do go to Goodreads, but reviews there are all over the place, so I take much more stock in the opinions of the great bloggers and writers I’ve met on this journey.

What about you? What is your go-to website to check out book reviews?

Book Blogger Hop: What apps do you use to create your social media posts? #BookBloggerHop

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book-related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blogs.

I use the Shutterstock website a lot for photos, and they have a cool create/edit feature that helps you create Instagram, Facebook, and other social media posts. I’m interested in finding other sites/apps though. Shutterstock costs me about $30 a month for ten photos, but I can create as many social media posts as I want using existing photos. I get to keep using the photo licenses I’ve bought before so I have a big catalog to choose from.

Anyone have any suggestions for sites/apps to create social media posts, especially Instagram?

#BookBloggerHop: Are Books A Must-have In Your Home?

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. Honestly, I thought they were pretty much a must-have in everyone’s home, whether in print copy or ebooks on a kindle. My house is full of books. I am looking directly at two overflowing bookcases right now and there are more upstairs, plus boxes of books I plan to give away. And my Kindle app is crammed with books too. I do give away many of my books, but my husband will not part with any of his, so there we are. I can’t imagine a house without books.

How about you? Is your house overflowing with books?

Book Blogger Hop: Do you #blog daily?

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. No. I would like to, but that probably won’t happen until after I retire in 1 year and 5 months. I do hope to blog at least 3 – 4 times per week, and that usually happens, but not always (like this week). After I retire I will have more time for writing and hope to put up something every day. Then there’s social media. Twitter is not too hard to update because I can share posts from here, but Instagram takes a lot of work! I’m going to have to take a class or something to get better at it.

How about you? How often do you blog or post on social media?

#BookBloggerHop: Do you listen to #audiobooks with #earbuds or #headphones?

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. This question was submitted by Billy at Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted writer.

Neither. I am hard of hearing and have been wearing hearing aids for about 20 years. The good news is hearing aids have improved a lot and now have bluetooth, so the audiobooks go straight to my hearing aids. It’s like the book is playing in my head. It’s awesome. The only exception is when I’m driving. When I’m driving I plug my phone into the car and listen to them over the car radio.

How do you listen to audiobooks?

My library in Bryson City, The Marianna Black Library, uses Libby and a couple of other apps to deliver ebooks and audiobooks electronically. I have downloaded an ebook from them before, so I must have used it at some point. This has inspired me to download Libby on my new phone.

It is amazing how libraries have evolved in my lifetime. In my childhood, the library offered mostly print copies to check out and take home. Now, you can get ebooks, audiobooks, or borrow books from a sister library without actually going there. They offer computer access and free wi-fi. One of the libraries I go to has a 3-D printer. A college library I visit online has extensive historical research archives I can access with a click. It is amazing how far libraries have come.

What about you? Do you download ebooks from your library? How have you seen your library evolve?

Book Blogger Hop: Blog Headers #bookbloggerhop

This week’s question was submitted by Elizabeth at Silver’s Reviews

I change my blog headers seasonally using pictures from Shutterstock. Currently, my winter header is up, but I’m going to switch to Spring soon. I also put up holiday headers sometimes. Lately I’ve been putting clocks in my various seasonal headers because I love time travel fiction, and it’s an ode to that. I may change that up at some point, but I’m sticking with clocks for now.

What about you? Is there a significance to the picture on top of your blog?

Book Blogger Hop: Do you use other sources for ARCs besides Netgalley

The first iteration of the Book Blogger Hop, which was started in March 2010 by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books, ended on December 31, 2012. The aim of the blog hop is to provide bloggers with an opportunity to follow other blogs, discover new books, make friends with other bloggers, and gain new followers for their own sites. See rules here.

This week’s question was submitted by ME. I must have submitted it a long time ago because I can’t recall it. Here it is:

As a book blogger, I would say Netgalley is my biggest source. I also use BookSirens, and some of those are ARCs. I get widgets sent directly from publishers, but those are Netgalley widgets. And of course, Indie authors send me their books to review for Indie Weekend. I will also get some ARCs if I sign up for book tours. In addition, I review books quarterly for The Historical Novel Society and I get a lot of ARCs from the publishers through them. So I am not hurting for books!

How about you?

If you are a blogger, what is your biggest source for books?

If you’re a writer, have you used Netgalley, BookSirens, or another site to promote your books? Do you use book tours?

Book Blogger Hop: Do You Enjoy Reading Romance Novels

The purpose of THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, and befriend other bloggers. THE BOOK BLOGGER HOP is hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer

 This week’s question:

My answer: Romance is not my favorite genre. If I read a romance, there has to be a lot more going on, such as a mystery, or a historical setting with a lot of historical events included. If I do choose a romance, it is usually a historical romance or romantic comedy. I don’t have a favorite trope.

How about you? Do you enjoy reading romance?

It truly doesn’t matter. I guess because I grew up with seven brothers and sisters, I am used to noise. I also have some hearing loss, so things are a bit quieter for me than they might be for others anyway. I think reading with music in the background can be nice as well.

What about you? What is your preferred setting? Quiet or Noisy?
