Book Blogger Hop is run by Billy@CoffeeAddictedWriter. There is a different bookish question each week. This week’s question is a tough one because it brings up a lot of memories.
That’s an easy but difficult answer at the same time. Three months. After my Mom died in March 2020, I couldn’t focus enough to read anything for three months. I was not blogging then, but I was reviewing on Netgalley and Booksirens, and I had to DNF everything because I just couldn’t focus enough to read.
Three months later I started back in with audiobooks, which are easier for me to focus on, and then in October 2020, I started blogging on this site. I’d had the blog before that time, but I wasn’t using it. I’ve been seriously blogging/reviewing ever since. My Mom was an avid reader who read a book a day, so I always feel that she inspired my blogging, and still does.
I understand the stop in your reading, Bonnie. When my parents died, it stopped my reading, too, though not as long. I got back to reading pretty quickly, to escape reality.

It took me a while to focus on anything. But, just like you, I was eventually helped by the reading.

I’ve always had to read something – cereal box, manuals, whatever, and then illness took away that ability. I’ve regained much of my ability, but find audiobooks now fill the gap.

Audiobooks are wonderful. I’m so glad they have helped you.

I can’t recall ever having not read, although in stressful times I might read something light that didn’t require a lot of concentration.

That’s the only time I can recall, when my concentration just went away for a while.

Grief affects us in weird ways, even makes things we love seem unappealing sometimes. I’m glad you found your way back to something you and your mom both enjoy(ed).

Yes. I didn’t do a ton of crying. I felt like I was in shock for a long time instead. Even though my Mom was in her 80s her death was sudden.

I lost my dad 11 years ago and I was the same way. I always process after going through something. 🤷🏻♀️ I find that it doesn’t matter if you’re expecting the loss or not, it sucks either way. I hope you’re finding ways to balance your grief with joy!

I love this remembrance of your mother. Since she was such an avid reader, I know she’d be overjoyed that you started reading again and she’d love your blog. I don’t know that I’ve ever gone a period without reading. Some stages in my life the reading was slower than others but it was and still is always a part of my day.

That’s the only time I can recall going without reading. And I truly love blogging. It’s like hosting a get together with book-loving friends.

I’ve gone on and off reading due to lack of time and being pregnant.

I totally understand. When my mom passed away in 2013, I also had to take a break from reading and most other things. I was blogging and I took about a three-month break from that as well. I’m sorry it was such a hard time for you. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

It’s understandable why your reading would suffer during that time. I am sorry for your loss. It may have been three years ago, but I know you must miss her. I am glad you decided to blog and read again.
The year my daughter was born was also the year my dad died, and my reading really suffered that year. That year was all a blur and I don’t really remember if I stopped reading for any length of time altogether or if I was just reading much more slowly.
I hope you have a great weekend.

Understandable that your mothers death would cause to not to be able to focus. What a profound loss🙏🏼 Lucky to still have my parents. And I am reading more lately!📚📘

Treasure the time you have with them. Now I treasure every little note and recipe my Mom left behind.

In the worst part of my fibromyalgia, I couldn’t concentrate to read at all. I’m so thankful the brain fog lifted months later so I could read, and then enough to write again!
