Book/Audiobook Review: The Disappearance of Astrid Bricard

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Everyone remembers her daringly short, silver lamé dress. An iconic photo capturing an electric moment, where emerging American designer Astrid Bricard is young, uninhibited, and on the cusp of fashion and feminism’s changing landscape. She and fellow designer Hawk Jones are all over Vogue and the disco scene. Yet she can’t escape the legacy of being the daughter of Mizza Bricard, infamous “muse” for Christian Dior. Astrid would give anything to take her place among the great houses of couture—on her own terms. I won’t inspire it when I can create it.

But then Astrid disappeared…

Now Astrid’s daughter, Blythe, holds what remains of her mother and grandmother’s legacies. Of all the Bricard women, she can gather the torn, shredded, and painfully beautiful fabrics of three generations of grief, heartbreak, and abandonment to create something that will shake the foundations of fashion. The only piece that’s missing is the one question that no one’s been able to answer: What really happened to Astrid?

BOOK REVIEW

This is a multi-period novel exploring the lives of three Bricard women who are talented but largely unrecognized for that talent.   Mizza Bricard was a talented designer who is better known as the real-life muse of Christian Dior.  Her fictionalized daughter Astrid Bricard was known as the daughter of Mizza Bricard and also as the muse of designer Hawk Jones.  Astrid’s daughter Blythe is fighting to be recognized as a designer in her own right, but she is in the shadow of media perceptions and her designer ex-husband Jake.  She is also living with the fact that her mother disappeared when she was a baby and her father has never been there for her either.

This novel looks at the oppression of women in the fashion industry, mental health, abandonment, and other issues.  The characters are strong, talented women who face an uphill battle with discrimination, public perception, and media portrayals.  The fashion industry background is richly described, and the treatment of the media towards women over the decades is eye-opening.  Important mental health issues that affect women are also brought to the forefront. The three time periods—the 1940s, 1970’s, and present day are very different, but all share the same issue of women fighting to be recognized in the fashion industry.  The love stories set in the midst of the glamour and betrayal of this industry are well done.

I also listened to the audiobook, and the narrator Barrie Kreinik does a great job of portraying all of the characters.

My rating is 4.5 stars, rounded up to five on sites with no half-star option.

Anyone interested in fashion and historical fiction will enjoy this novel.

COVER OPTIONS. WHICH DO YOU LIKE BETTER?

Below are the American and Australian covers. Which one do you like better? I think I’m leaning toward the Australian cover, but I like the color of the dress on the American cover. I don’t always like it when they cut the face in half on a cover, so I will choose Australia.

Blog Tour and Book Review: His Secret Daughter by Melissa Wiesner

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Not Noah. Not my husband. But there he is, unconscious in the hospital bed. Our daughter sobs into my shoulder. We love him so much. What if he never wakes up? And who is the little girl beside him, gazing up at us with big, tear-filled brown eyes? Eyes that look just like my husband’s…

Our family of three is perfect. Just me, Noah and our teenage daughter Maya. The day the police knock at our door, telling us about the car accident, is the worst day of my life. My heart shatters, but what they say next almost makes it stop beating: Noah was in the car with another woman who died at the scene. Her two-year-old girl, Luna, miraculously survived.

With Noah fighting for his life, I’m desperate for the truth: and when I search his desk, I find checks made out to Luna’s mother. Did my loving, loyal husband have a secret family all along?

Despite my own terrible pain, at the hospital I can’t help but comfort this poor child as she cries for her mommy. With nowhere else for Luna to go, I find myself opening our home. Seeing Maya hold Luna’s hand and giggle as they chase butterflies in the garden, it’s almost like my daughter has a sister…

I have an impossible choice. Do I tell Maya the truth about her father? If Noah wakes up, will even more secrets come out about who he really is? And can I forgive him enough to give this sweet, innocent girl a home… or will my husband’s betrayal tear us all apart?

Fans of Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper, Kate Hewitt and Diane Chamberlain will adore this absolutely unputdownable read about how the people we love most can hide the darkest secrets.

Book Review

When the police knock on Emma’s door, she is unprepared for what she is about to hear. Her husband, Noah, has been in a car accident and is in a coma. The woman who was with him has passed away. But what should be done with the little three-year-old girl, Luna, who survived the accident? Emma is speechless, because she has no idea who the woman is, and her only child with Noah is a teenager, Maya. Is Noah the father of this little girl? Thus begins Emma’s journey as she unlocks her husband’s past and finds out the secrets he’s been keeping.

I enjoyed this story of a man’s secret past and how it affects his family. The author does a good job of portraying Emma’s emotions as she peels back layer after layer of the life of her husband, who she thought she had known. Flashes back to the past show us how Emma and Noah meet, fell in love, and marry. Emma’s struggles as a parent during this tragedy are portrayed in a realistic way. This is a well-crafted story with unexpected pieces that fall perfectly into place. It is at times a heartbreaking read. Fans of women’s fiction and “hidden past” stories will enjoy this book.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Lady Lucy Duff Gordon

A sumptuous novel based on the fascinating true story of La Belle Époque icon Lucy, Lady Duff Gordon, who shattered the boundaries of fashion with her magnificently sensual and enchantingly unique designs.

Lucy Duff Gordon knows she is talented. She sees color, light, and texture in ways few people can begin to imagine. But is the male-dominated world of haute couture, who would use her art for their own gain, ready for her?

When she is deserted by her wealthy husband, Lucy is left penniless with an aging mother and her five-year-old daughter to support. Desperate to survive, Lucy turns to her one true talent to make a living. As a little girl, the dresses she made for her dolls were the envy of her group of playmates. Now, she uses her creative designs and her remarkable eye for color to take her place in the fashion world—failure is not an option.

Then, on a frigid night in 1912, Lucy’s life changes once more, when she becomes one of 706 people to survive the sinking of the Titanic. She could never have imagined the effects the disaster would have on her fashion label Lucile, her marriage to her second husband, and her legacy. But no matter what life throws at her, Lucy will live on as a trailblazing and innovative fashion icon, never letting go of what she worked so hard to earn.

ONE OF LUCY DUFF GORDON’S DESIGNS

This one’s not violet taffeta, but this 1918 evening dress of bright leaf green and red shot silk is another eye-catching design by Lady Duff Gordon.

BOOK REVIEW

What a gorgeously written and beautifully woven work of historical fiction! The accomplishments of “Madame Lucile,” aka Lucy Duff-Gordon, come to life. Tessa Arlen has managed to capture Lucy’s incredible talent and vision for color, and then translate that to the written word for all of us to see. Lucy led an absolutely incredible life, from penniless abandonment by her first husband to building her own business and finding success as a fashion designer. Despite poverty and the scorn of divorce at that time, Lucy took control of her own destiny. At her side is Celia, also impeccably written. Celia is actually a composite of two women who were very important in Lady Duff-Gordon’s life and business. The chapters vary between Lucy and Celia, and this gives us a look at two different class experiences of women in the early 1900s.

I also loved the peeks we get into the very dressing rooms of some of Lucy’s clients, and we get to see the way they are transformed by her amazing gowns. And we watch Lucy find love again. Lucy’s second marriage to Cosmo Duff-Gordon is written in a realistic way with all its ups and downs, especially their presence on and survival of the sinking of the Titanic, the media frenzy afterward, and its effect on their marriage. This is a mesmerizing, captivating work of art that transports us to late 19th and early 20th Century London (and later America). A Dress of Violet Taffeta truly shows us the life of a visionary woman who lived through hard times and made the most of them. Anyone who wants to read an incredible story of grit, determination, and extraordinary talent will certainly enjoy this gem by Tessa Arlen.
