BOOK DESCRIPTION (AMAZON)

In 1998, the American Jorgenson family had been on a year-long road trip in Australia. On a humid, storming night, the mother – Elsa Jorgenson – vanished in an isolated stretch of Australian everglades. Elsa was never seen again.

That night, twelve-year-old Lily Jorgenson was left alone and terrified in the family camper—even her teenage sister Iris is missing. When Iris comes racing back through the rain, she refuses to tell where she’s been. Lily is certain her sister is hiding a dark secret.

24-years later, Lily is a travel writer living a settled life with her son in Pennsylvania, USA. Lily and Iris are estranged, with Iris’s secret having torn them apart. When floods dredge up their mother’s backpack from the everglades, tantalising clues are uncovered, and the police reactivate the cold case.

Lily returns to Australia, determined to force Iris to finally tell her secret – and to do that, she’ll have to reunite with her. But when Lily unlocks the gut-wrenching events of the past, everything she thought was true about her family is about to shatter.

BOOK REVIEW

In 1998, Elsa Jorgenson suddenly disappears during a road trip with her daughters, Lily and Iris, in Australia. Iris also vanishes briefly, but returns, and the girls begin a tumultuous journey without their mother, who has completely vanished. Twenty-four years later, Lily returns to Australia, determined to get answers. She will start with her estranged sister, Iris, for Lily is convinced Iris is keeping secrets.

Birds in Flight is a compelling and nuanced mystery that will keep you guessing. The secrets and revelations are riveting. Among the serious issues discussed are mental health, depression, abuse, abandonment, and cult-like behavior. This book is so richly layered, and as each layer is lifted, more of an absolutely intriguing mystery is revealed. It’s a dynamic story of family secrets and the quest to finally solve them. It’s also a road trip book in more ways than one, as Lily and Iris retrace their mother’s footsteps and learn her life story.

I had a hard time putting this mystery/adventure down, and the conclusion is clever, heartbreaking, and unexpected. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a complex mystery that explores family dynamics. This is a story you won’t soon forget.

I also listened to the audiobook, and the narrator, Harriet Gordon-Anderson, was phenomenal. She was able to voice different characters and accents with ease. And her ability to truly make the characters who were talking on the phone actually sound that way was astonishing.

Five stars for the story. Five stars for the narration.

I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.

Book Blogger Hop: What apps do you use to create your social media posts? #BookBloggerHop

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book-related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blogs.

I use the Shutterstock website a lot for photos, and they have a cool create/edit feature that helps you create Instagram, Facebook, and other social media posts. I’m interested in finding other sites/apps though. Shutterstock costs me about $30 a month for ten photos, but I can create as many social media posts as I want using existing photos. I get to keep using the photo licenses I’ve bought before so I have a big catalog to choose from.

Anyone have any suggestions for sites/apps to create social media posts, especially Instagram?

WWW Wednesday: What are you reading? #JodiTaylor #Colleen Cambridge #LisaHCatmull

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam over on Taking on a World of Words

The idea is pretty simple, every week you dedicate a post to the three W’s:

What are you currently reading?

What have you just finished reading?

What are you going to read next?

You can read more about the books below by clicking on the covers.

What are you currently reading?

There’s a cool story to this one. Anyone who has been reading this blog for a while knows that Jodi Taylor is my favorite author. She put a post on her fan page the other day saying that her publisher, Headline, had put the ARC of the next book in her Chronicles of St. Mary’s series on Netgalley, but only as a “Wish For.” I went to Netgalley to wish for it anyway, even though wishes don’t get granted very often. I was soon disappointed to learn it wasn’t offered on Netgalley US at all, only Netgalley UK. So I figured I had no chance. Then it occurred to me to try to sign onto Netgalley UK with my US account, and it worked! So I was able to wish for it, and it was approved. So wishes do come true on Netgalley sometimes. :). As is my rule with Jodi Taylor books, this one went to the head of the TBR line and I’m reading it now even though it’s not released until June 22.

This is Book 14 in an amazing series that is a mashup of time travel and historical fiction. I recommend reading them in order.

What have you just finished reading?

I finished this one, and my review will be up in the next couple of weeks when it’s closer to the April 25th release date. (I LOVED it)! In this historical murder mystery, the main character, Tabitha, is a neighbor and friend of Julia Child in Paris. Tabitha is investigating the murder of a woman behind their building, and to top it all off, the deed was done with Julia’s own chef’s knife!

I’ll be reading this one for a blog tour with Austenprose in April. It’s the second book in the Jane Austen Vacation Club series. It’s a Jane Austen inspired romantic comedy.

What about you? What are you reading?

With incredible odds stacked against them and an unexpected enemy endangering their search, the Noland kids must uncover the dusty clues to this ancient city and discover its long-lost light in order to rescue Lens’ parents… and themselves!

BOOK REVIEW

I love the idea of a faith-based Christian mystery/adventure. It is also a great idea to show kids of missionaries having adventures all over the world, because kids of missionaries do get to travel, learn other languages, and immerse themselves in other cultures. The story is intriguing, and there is plenty of adventure, including dealing with molten lava, jungle creatures, and terrorists. I enjoyed the closeness of the family and the love of God that shines throughout this book. And as a Christian I loved that the kids prayed when they needed help. There is also a strong message of forgiveness.

Some slight criticism: Eight years have passed since the first book. Caleb is now 20, David is 18 and Lizzy is 16. I enjoyed the first book in this series and easily classified that one as middle-grade. Since the kids’ ages have been increased so much in this book, I would normally classify it as a young adult book. However, it still reads like a middle-grade series, and I don’t think many of the conversations in the book are reflective of the way 16 to 20-year-olds would speak. That being said, this is a wonderful Christian adventure that kids will enjoy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Pastor and author Mike Curtis brings adventure to life in his new Noland Kids Adventure book series. Growing up in a sports-focused family that loved camping, exploring, and all things adventure, Mike dove into teen ministry in his early twenties to bring the Good News to a distracted and struggling generation.

He is married to the popular homeschooling author and speaker Meredith Curtis. They live in Lake Mary, Florida and have five children and five grandchildren. As a spiritual dad and pastor of Powerline Church, his passion is sharing life-giving principles from God’s Word that impact and transform others.

In his spare time he loves to watch adventure movies like The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies with his family and friends, and on occasion has been found sacrificing for those he loves by watching a Hallmark romance. He can also be found indulging in books on apologetics, theology, and leadership, in addition to some aggressive ping pong matches during discipleship time with young men. And next to a good steak, Mike’s favorite dish is beef tongue!

His desire is to use his books to mentor the next generation, sharing Christ and biblical principles of character in relevant and enjoyable adventure stories and practical studies.

#BookBloggerHop: Are Books A Must-have In Your Home?

Honestly, I thought they were pretty much a must-have in everyone’s home, whether in print copy or ebooks on a kindle. My house is full of books. I am looking directly at two overflowing bookcases right now and there are more upstairs, plus boxes of books I plan to give away. And my Kindle app is crammed with books too. I do give away many of my books, but my husband will not part with any of his, so there we are. I can’t imagine a house without books.

How about you? Is your house overflowing with books?

Another Beautiful Poetry Book on Sale! #Poetry #Sales #IndieBooks

Great news! Another book in Louise Belanger’s Christian Poetry collection is on sale!

Your Words, Your Heart is Louise’s third book in the collection, and it’s on sale for 99 cents.

Below is a repost of my 5-star review of Your Words, Your Heart

This is the third book in Louise Bélanger’s wonderful Christian poetry collection. When released, it was the number one new release in both the “Christian Poetry” and “Religious and Inspirational Poetry” categories on Amazon. The poems are accompanied by stunningly beautiful photographs. The author’s strong and simple faith shines through on every page. Louise’s words show us that faith in God does not have to be complicated and will bring you great peace.

The poem Wings is one of my favorites, as it conjures up images of millions of prayers flying around the world, on their way up to God.

I also love Who Wins, which starts out:

“There is a glass
inside of us
Where trust and doubt compete.

As glass will not expand
They fight for space.”

It is about what we allow into our soul and who and what we trust.

My favorite poem may be Petals like Hearts. It starts out:

“Petals, like hearts
are subject to frost.”

That may be my favorite line in the book because it’s so true.

The poem most evident of the author’s strong faith is With You, which makes me feel peaceful whenever I read it.

The photographs of this book were taken by the author in her home city of Montreal and they are absolutely spectacular. The cover photo blows me away. It is just so mesmerizing. There are so many great photos in this book.

This book will leave you filled with hope and beauty, and that’s a great way to start, continue, or end any day.

World Poetry Day: And here is a deal for you!

This is a beautiful book of Christian poetry and photography. The ebook is on sale beginning today for 99 cents. The Author, Louise Bélanger, was awarded a 2022 Gold Medal from Reader’s Favorite for this uplifting and captivating book.

Here is a repost of my 5-star review:

Your Words, Your World is a beautiful collection of poetry, photographs, and story poems about God and the world He created, and the second book of poems by Louise Bélanger. It helps the reader look at the world in a new way.

Among my favorite poems is Ordinary, about how God can take something ordinary, like a star or a body of water, and make it do extraordinary things. I also loved Dust, which reminds us that God created us all from something we don’t really like–dust. A War Erupted paints a beautiful and tumultuous picture of a thunderstorm. The Contest is a thought-provoking story poem about a conversation between flowers. Zoom to Heaven is probably my favorite of all, as it talks about what it would be like to have a Zoom conversation with a loved one in Heaven.

Your Words, Your World takes a unique look at God and the world He created, and it makes me appreciate Him and this world all the more.

The photographs of nature throughout the book are gorgeous and mesmerizing, and they make perfect companions to the poems.

Sunday Post: Spring has Sprung!

Spring is here! On this blog anyway. I’ve done my seasonal changing of the colors. Some of you may still be getting snow, but Spring will take over soon enough.

This week I got all my reviews for the May edition of Historical Novels Review (HNR), the magazine of the Historical Novel Society (HNS), in and on time! I have been working on some of those since January. That resulted in my not being able to post as much last week, but there will be seven reviews I can post later (after the May 1st publication date).

Here’s a look at the covers of all the books I reviewed for the May edition of HNR.

I have been reading and reviewing as much as possible, so I have some reviews to post in the coming week.

Doug and I watched a really interesting show a couple of weeks ago on Apple TV. It’s called The Shining Girls. It is a crime/thriller that also includes alternate reality and time travel! It was excellent, and not easy to figure out. If you like time travel, thrillers, and puzzles, give this one a try. I liked it so much that I got the audiobook of the novel of the same name by Lauren Beukes, and a review will be along in a couple weeks after I finish listening to it.

Indie Weekend: I posted last week that I have paused new submissions for Indie Weekend until June so I can get caught up. If you are one of the authors whose books I have accepted for Indie Weekend, look for an email from me when I give you a firm date of when the review will be posted. If you don’t get an email from me by Wednesday, contact me at bonniereadsandwrites@gmail.com.

LAST WEEK ON THE BLOG

On Friday I posted an excerpt from The Walk On for a blog tour sponsored by AME. I couldn’t put my review up because it was 3 stars and they require at least 4 for the tour. So they provided me with an excerpt and I will post the review later.

On Friday I also participated in Book Blogger Hop and answered the question: Do you Blog Daily?

On Saturday I reviewed Chronicles of the Golden City for Indie Weekend.

NEXT WEEK ON THE BLOG

On Tuesday I will post my review of The Walk On.

I will participate in Top Ten Tuesday if time permits.

On Thursday, the 23rd, I will be highlighting some great deals on Louise Bélanger’s poetry collection, which is going on sale next week.

On Friday I will review The Metropolitan Affair and participate in Book Blogger Hop.

On Indie Weekend I will review Birds in Flight by Anni Taylor and The Hedge Witch and the Musical Poet by MJ Mallon.

BOOK HAUL

This is a fascinating book about a Civil War era racehorse from whom twelve of horseracing’s thirteen Triple Crown winners are descended.

This is Book 3 of the Ice Cream Shop mysteries. I will have to check out the other two. Sometimes you just gotta read a good cozy.

This is the sixth Daniel Pitt novel, which can all be read as standalones. It is set in 1912 London. Daniel is working on a fraud case against a very wealthy philanthropist and Miriam becomes involved in the suffrage movement. I just love Anne Perry’s books.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

BOOK REVIEW

This is a well-written young adult fantasy with a medieval tone. Harper has gotten an opportunity, through a friend of his father’s, Hammond, to go to the Golden City, Mascaroth, to be a soldier. Harper will be joined by his close friend Linden, and they are also traveling with Bailey and Carrington, the coddled children of the King. Linden has different goals in mind and really just wants to find a wife. Harper, however, is soon intrigued by the Einari, the ancient soldiers of Mascaroth, as his training to be a soldier begins. Thus commences a sweeping and bloody saga, as the Southern Tribesmen are plotting a takeover, and good and evil come to an inevitable clash.

I really enjoyed this novel, which includes some very captivating “stories within a story” about the Einari. Everything is so well written and woven together. Harper encounters love, betrayal, bitterness, torture, unexpected friends, and the horrors of war as he fights for freedom in more ways than one. It is truly an epic fantasy adventure of which the author can be proud. Some well-done surprises truly reveal the fact that people do not always act as expected during times of war. I highly recommend setting off on this adventure, which will immerse you into a world of swords, castles, and ancient soldiers. There is also a touch of romance. My hat is off to A.P. Knight for creating an excellent world and a wonderful story.

I downloaded a copy of this novel via Kindle Unlimited, where subscribers can read this book for free.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A.P. Knight

Andy isn’t the stereotypical author. Not only would he prefer a Dr. Seuss book to a classic, but he’d also rather have a ball in his hands than a keyboard under his fingers. But one day a story popped into his mind that he deemed too important not to write, and upon endless hours of typing, deleting, and retyping, his writing career began. If you’re searching for a young adult clean read that is as stirring as it is inspiring, then crack open one of Andy’s books.

A Midwesterner to his core, Andy prefers the simple life: shooting hoops, chasing pop flies in the outfield, hanging out with family, and scarfing heaping bowls of chocolate ice cream.

No. I would like to, but that probably won’t happen until after I retire in 1 year and 5 months. I do hope to blog at least 3 – 4 times per week, and that usually happens, but not always (like this week). After I retire I will have more time for writing and hope to put up something every day. Then there’s social media. Twitter is not too hard to update because I can share posts from here, but Instagram takes a lot of work! I’m going to have to take a class or something to get better at it.

How about you? How often do you blog or post on social media?
