Book Blogger Hop: Fireworks or Reading?

Thank you to Billy at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer for hosting Book Blogger Hop. There is a different bookish question every week.

Answer: It’s not that I don’t like fireworks. I’ve enjoyed them in the past, but only the beautiful ones. I’ve never understood making noise for the sake of making noise without the beautiful light show. But these days I don’t like fireworks much because they absolutely terrify my dogs, especially Harold, our wire-haired dachshund. They make him shake, cry, and tremble for hours, so I’m not a fan. I always love reading, so the choice is obvious.

Some dogs who are outside will bolt and run away from their owners when they hear firecrackers. So it’s not a good situation. If the fireworks are done by a professional at an organized event, then I’m okay with it. Setting them off in your yard at home: No.

Doug with the dogs. Herman (chocolate and cream) and Harold (black and white). Holly was still alive then and is laying down behind Hermann. She was a red and white piebald.

Book Blogger Hop: Do you have a reading routine?

Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Billy@CoffeeAddictedWriter. It is a chance for bloggers to visit and share, and it offers a new question every week.

Not really. In fact I don’t think I have much of a reading routine at all. When I was a kid I would lay in bed and just devour books. Now I just read wherever and am driven too often by blogger deadlines. When I retire I’ll have a lot more time to read and relax. That’s what I think anyway. 🙂

What about you? Do you have any kind of reading routine?

Book Blogger Hop: Which fictional character would you like to meet?

There are so many, but I’m going to choose Gandalf from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I’m short, and my feet kind of look like a hobbit’s when I’m in between pedicures. Maybe he’ll take me on an adventure. 🙂

Seriously, though he’s such a cool but noble character who always fights for the good. As Aslan is a symbol for Christ in the Narnia books, I think Gandalf could be a symbol for Christ or God in Lord of the Rings.

Book Blogger Hop: Do you still enjoy reading Children’s Books?

The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and ended on December 31, 2012. With Jennifer’s permission, Billy @ Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer relaunched the hop on February 15, 2013. Each week the hop will start on a Friday and end the following Thursday. There will be a weekly prompt featuring a book-related question. The hop’s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to their own blogs.

Yes! I’ll start with a famous quote by C.S. Lewis: “No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally (and often far more) worth reading at the age of fifty.”

I still read The Chronicles of Narnia and the Little House books sometimes. The Horse and His Boy is my favorite Narnia book and The Long Winter is my favorite Little House book. I still read Middle Grade books for review and have re-read some of them and picked up new favorites. I consider Middle Grade books “children’s books” too because 12 and under are still children. I have never forgotten the comforting rhymes of the Dr. Seuss books. Since I became a grandparent 8 years ago, I am sure I have read Goodnight Moon 143 million times, and I still appreciate it.

How about you? Do you still enjoy reading Children’s Books?

I am not necessarily a collector of first editions, but I do collect signed books and I have looked for first editions in the past. I would categorize the question more as “able to afford” instead of hard to find. I saw a first edition of Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers selling for over $500. I can’t afford to spend that on a book right now or in the foreseeable future.

I do have signed first editions of several of Jodi Taylor’s books, both from when she was with a small press and after she signed with Headline. She actually sells signed books on her website and the new books usually come before the publication date, so I have several of those. She lives in the UK and hasn’t yet done a tour in the US. If she ever does, I’ll be there with my book to sign. Also, when an author sends me a book to review directly, I always ask them to sign it. To my author friends: Thank You!

One of the things I plan to do for fun after I retire is travel to lots of book signings by my favorite authors.

This is my signed copy of Jodi Taylor’s first book. Isabel Barclay is the villain in her first book and the main character, Madeline Maxwell (Max), calls her Bitchface. Thus the inscription.

What about you: Do you collect first editions, signed books, or anything book related?

I’ll have to count:

I have an Audible account and one audiobook a month comes with that, so I buy one audiobook a month.

I also have a Kindle Unlimited account, and I’m allowed to borrow up to 20 books at a time. But they aren’t free because I pay a monthly fee for it. In the end I have to return them, so I guess those don’t count. But I do pay a fee. I use this a lot for Self-Published Saturday so I can read the books and the authors still get credit for it.

And of course, like all book bloggers, I get tons and tons of free books, resulting in a mountainous TBR. I have boxes of books I’ve read and reviewed that are going to be donated to free libraries and various other places. You would think that with all those free books coming in, I wouldn’t need to buy any, but I do.

I have certain authors whose books I always buy, especially my favorite, Jodi Taylor, author of the Chronicles of St. Mary’s and Time Police series. I buy her books in hardcover (she sells signed copies on her website), ebook for the convenience, and audiobook because even after reading the print book, I always hear something on the audiobook that I missed. There are a few other authors whose books I always buy.

So despite getting all these free books, I would say I buy two to four books a month, counting the audiobook.
