Thank you to Billy at The Caffeinated Book Reviewer for hosting Book Blogger Hop. There is a different bookish question every week.

Answer: It’s not that I don’t like fireworks. I’ve enjoyed them in the past, but only the beautiful ones. I’ve never understood making noise for the sake of making noise without the beautiful light show. But these days I don’t like fireworks much because they absolutely terrify my dogs, especially Harold, our wire-haired dachshund. They make him shake, cry, and tremble for hours, so I’m not a fan. I always love reading, so the choice is obvious.
Some dogs who are outside will bolt and run away from their owners when they hear firecrackers. So it’s not a good situation. If the fireworks are done by a professional at an organized event, then I’m okay with it. Setting them off in your yard at home: No.

Doug with the dogs. Herman (chocolate and cream) and Harold (black and white). Holly was still alive then and is laying down behind Hermann. She was a red and white piebald.

Oh my gosh…the look on Harold’s face so precious you want to hug him. We love watching the organized fireworks at our fireman’s field on the 4th, but the private fireworks haphazardly firing off at all hours, all weekend drive us and our pup nuts.
Thanks. He is a cutie! Same here as far as fireworks. Our dogs get absolutely terrified. It’s been a long time since I went to a fireworks show, but I have no problem with organized fireworks done in a safe manner away from housing areas.
I’ve always worked in rescue, so I’ve never been a fan of fireworks. It’s the worst time of the year for shelters and rescues. They always have to man up for this time of year to get ready for the onslaught of dogs coming into the shelters during July 4th week that have been spooked by careless neighborhood fireworks and escaped their homes or fences. And that means euthanasia rates go up to make room for all the extra dogs coming in. It’s just a lethal situation all the way around. Btw, I’ve never heard of a wire hair dachshund. What a cutie!! He looks just like some kind of terrier mix. Were all 3 of your pups dachshunds? Even Holly (with her precious little white belly showing)? They are all ADORABLE!!! 🩷
Yes wire haired dachshund is a recognized breed. We first saw one during the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. I totally agree about the fireworks.
Yes Holly was a piebald dachshund. She passed away this year. We miss her
I hate fireworks. Some idiot a few doors down was setting off firecrackers just yesterday. Your pups are just adorable!
Thanks Liz. I do not even see the point of firecrackers. I was just watching an old episode of 911 where some kids blew their hands off, and I hear that happens a lot in real life too!
You’re welcome, Bonnie. You’re right about people blowing their fingers off with firecrackers.
I have enjoyed fireworks displays in the past. Now we very seldom go to the location and see the display. When neighbors shoot their fireworks, we can rarely see them.
It’s been a long time since I saw a professional fireworks display too. The crowd and the parking are difficult to deal with.
Awww, poor Harold! My two dachshunds don’t seem to care too much. I’m usually at my brother’s house and there aren’t a ton of people who live right around me that do fireworks. So while when we’re outside and some are going off, Dora will whine, and Argyle will look around, they don’t mind them. If I didn’t go to my brother’s house though, I’d probably just stay home and read too!
