Book Review

1930s. Preston Stone and Vivian Steele are back, and this time they are on a cruise ship to Cuba. But they are not alone. Preston is searching for a killer, who may be on the ship, and shadowy figures are tailing Vivian. Is her life on the line? Vivian’s best friend Carole Lombard is along for the ride, which will take them from the ship to a luxury hotel to the jungle and more. In this final, action-packed conclusion to the Stone and Steele series, secrets are revealed, and nobody is safe.

I enjoyed this wild ride to Cuba! The descriptions of the cruise ship and luxury hotel made me feel as if I were there. The portrayal of Havana as a popular spot for American tourists and celebrities at that time is spot on. The action in the jungle is not to be missed. The mystery itself is full of red herrings, twists, and turns. Just when you feel you have it figured out, you don’t. The cast of characters is entertaining, whether they are dining in luxury or trying to break out of jail. Once again, Gail Meath delivers a compelling mystery with characters that we care about. The author’s note at the end is full of interesting historical facts and anecdotes. There is also a tribute to Carole Lombard, and I learned a lot about her. This is an enjoyable journey from start to finish. Take a trip to 1930s Cuba with Stone and Steele. Highly Recommended.

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley, and also purchased a copy. My review is voluntary, and the opinions expressed are my own.

About the Author

Gail Meath is the author of the multi-award-winning Jax Diamond Mysteries, a fun 1920s series about wise-cracking PI Jax Diamond, his courageous German Shepherd partner, Ace, and Broadway star Laura Graystone. She is alternating that series with her 1930s Golden Age of Hollywood mysteries series, Stone & Steele, starring Vivian Steele, a widow seeking justice, and Preston Stone, a playboy vigilante.

Gail loves researching history, crafting mysteries with clues hidden in plain sight, building characters with a sense of humor, and always includes some very clever canine and feline companions. She also has a list of other award-winning historical romances, westerns, and fictional biographies of true heroines. She lives in a small village in Upstate New York with her husband and sweet Boston Terrier, and she spends loads of time with her grandchildren.
