This week I spent Monday through Wednesday in a work frenzy, trying to get everything done before going on vacation. The rest of the week after that has been much-needed bliss, hanging out with family and taking in majestic views. Looking at the mountains reminds me how anything is possible for God, who created them. It’s almost time to return to work, but this weekend has been much needed and appreciated.
Review of Last Week
Monday I reviewed Drawn by the Current, a historical novel set around the sinking of the SS Eastland in Chicago, 1915.
On Friday I reviewed Shimmer by Alan Meredith as part of a tour for Zooloo’s Book Tours.

Where does the time go? I had a busy work week last week so I didn’t get all the books read that I planned. Sometimes the best-laid plans just do not work out. I’m going on vacation part of next week and will have more time to catch up on my reading. I’m going to try and set a less ambitious schedule for the next couple of weeks anyway because I’ve got several reviews due for the Historical Novel Society in June. I won’t be able to publish those until August 1st, per their policy, but I still have some that I did back in March for the May issue that I haven’t shared yet, and at least one of those will go up this week.
REVIEW OF LAST WEEK
Monday I did a blog tour and book review of The Adoption for Bookouture
Tuesday I reviewed Freedom or Death, the fourth book in the Juche series by Adria Carmichael.
Thursday I posted a review of The Commandant’s Daughter that I did for the May issue of Historical Novel Society.
And for Self-Published Saturday I reviewed A Class Coveted by Susie Murphy.
PREVIEW OF THE COMING WEEK
On Sunday of course is Sunday Spotlight.
On Monday I will post a review of Drawn by the Current by Jocelyn Green
On Tuesday I will post a review of The Eleventh Commandment by Mary F. Burns. I wrote this one back in March for the May issue of Historical Novel Society’s magazine, Historical Novels Review.
On Thursday I will post a review of The Girl from Lamaha Street, which was originally planned for last week but time got the better of me.
For Self-Published Saturday I will spotlight some self-published books.
BOOKS APPROVED ON NETGALLEY THIS WEEK:
I must be in the mood for baking because I requested and received two cookbooks: BAKE by Paul Hollywood and Everyday Cake by Polina Chesnakova.
Then I picked up a novel about a young pie maker who gets a magical chance to see how her life would have worked out if she had made different choices. It’s called The Magic of Lemon Drop Pie by Rachel Linden. I must have been hungry when I made my Netgalley requests.
I was also approved for Nicholas Sparks’ new book Dreamland, which is not about food. So that’s one out of four.
EDITED to add that I received a 917-page book from Greenleaf Book Group. It’s called Gods of Deception and it’s huge. This one’s gonna take a while.
Have a great week everyone! Hopefully I’ll be able to get a lot of reading done over Memorial Day weekend.

REVIEW OF LAST WEEK
It was a busy work week but I’ve managed to stay organized and was able to get most of what I had planned for the blog done, with a couple of exceptions. Today, my husband made me a steak for Mother’s Day, and although I already got my presents for the whole year when I purchased Cincinnati Bengals season tickets, he still got me a sugar/parmesan shaker in a pattern of glass I collect, Moon and Star. My son called me to wish me a Happy Mother’s Day, and I posted a tribute to my wonderful Mom who passed in 2020.
The blog in review:
On Monday I did a cover reveal of The Sign of The Weeping Virgin and a Spotlight of The Coronation. I also posted a short story that would have been our March entry for the #2022 Short Story Challenge, which was delayed due to illness.
On Sunday I posted our May entry for the 2022 Short Story Challenge, which finally gets us caught up. It is a tribute to My Storytelling Mom.
A LOOK AT NEXT WEEK
On Monday I will post my review The Salt Fields by Stacy D. Flood. This is a book I reviewed for the May edition of The Historical Novels Review, the magazine of the Historical Novel Society.
I’m also going to post my review of the audiobook of The Wedding Season, which I did not have time to post last week.
On Wednesday I’ll be posting a review of A Brilliant Night of Stars and Ice, which I reviewed for the May edition of Historical Novels Review.
On Saturday, for Self-Published Saturday, I’ll be reviewing The Coronation by Justin Newland. I did a spotlight last week for a blog tour but was unable to get the review done, so I’ll be doing it this week.

I’m a huge football fan (American football), and I spent Thursday, Friday, and Saturday glued to the tv watching the draft. My team is the Cincinnati Bengals, and has been for 40 years.
My favorite part of the draft is seeing these young men with their families and watching their dreams come true.
This is one of the most heartwarming videos from the night. He says “Hey Mama! We’re Going To Cincinnati!”
LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT WEEK
Monday, May 2
On Monday I’ll be reviewing The Coronation by Justin Newland as part of a blog tour for Zooloo’s Book Tours
UPDATE: I posted a spotlight but could not get the book finished in time for a review. The review will go up next week.
I’ll also be doing a cover reveal for The Sign of the Weeping Virgin for Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours. (HFVBT)
I’ll be posting a new short story that my husband and I wrote for the 2022 Short Story Challenge by A Virginia Writer’s Diary.
On Tuesday I’ll start sharing some of the reviews I did for the May issue of Historical Novels Review, the magazine of the Historical Novel Society.
On Wednesday I’ll be reviewing the audiobook of Bloomsbury Girls as part of a blog tour for Austenprose
On Thursday, I’ll be reviewing the audiobook of The Wedding Season.
On Self-Published Saturday, I will be doing a spotlight of Forever Silenced by Richard Cohen

I started participating in The Sunday Post meme because I think it will actually be helpful in planning and organizing my coming week. Here’s my review of last week and plans for the coming week.
My Week in Review
Monday was a crawl back to reality as my husband and I were on vacation most of the previous week. We were at our future retirement house in Bryson City, NC and enjoying beautiful mountain views and the company of family. We had a great time celebrating Easter there. Monday I was back to my job and looking forward to retirement in two years!
Tuesday I hosted a stop on the blog tour for A Kinder City, provided by Zooloo’s Book Tours.
Thursday I hosted a stop on the blog tour for It Never Occurred to Her, provided by R&R Book Tours
And the highlight of the week is always Self-Published Saturday, where I review and promote only self-published or indie books. This week I reviewed A Breath of Fresh God by Charissa Fryberger and promoted Gail Meath’s wonderful saga Agustina De Aragon.
New Book Received
Although my Netgalley shelf is quite full, I was approved for an audiobook I couldn’t pass up, The Wedding Season by Katy Birchall. Here’s the cover and blurb:
Freya Scott is getting married. Her wedding to Matthew, her long-term boyfriend, is the first of eight in her calendar this year, and as someone who prides herself on being meticulously organized, Freya is intent on making it the perfect day to remember.
But when Matthew calls things off hours before they walk down the aisle, Freya’s entire life plan goes up in smoke. Humiliated and heartbroken, the last thing she wants is to attend a summer of other peoples’ nuptials on her own.
Fortunately, her friends have an idea: together they devise a series of outrageous challenges for Freya to complete at each event, designed to distract her from Matthew and what might have been. From getting stuck in an old church bathroom and needing to be rescued by the vicar to making out with a barman at a French chateau, Freya realizes that despite herself, she might just be having fun.
By the time the final wedding arrives, she will discover that the road to a happy ending sometimes has unexpected detours, that “I do” is only the beginning––and that perhaps her own love story isn’t over just yet.
MY WEEK AHEAD
Monday I will be posting my review of A Matter of Death and Life by Simon R. Green. Here’s the amazing cover:
Tuesday I will be reviewing The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray. This is a very intriguing mystery using characters from all of Jane Austen’s books. This is part of a blog tour for Austenprose.
Edited to add the Wednesday post: I’m writing a post called: Covers that Scare You Away! because I just saw the scariest dang cover while reading other blogs! So stay tuned for that!
Friday the 29th I will be posting a review of Only for my Daughter by Emma Robinson. This is part of a blog tour for Bookouture.
And on Self-Published Saturday (SPS) I plan to review two books:
Cathedral of Silver by Ian Wall . This is a suspenseful sci-fi read!
And I’m also reviewing Tales of the Romanov Empire by Tamar Anolic on Saturday for SPS. This is a collection of short stories that examines the Romanov Dynasty.
If you are an indie author and have any promotions going on that you would like to put on self-published Saturday or if you want me to spotlight your book, contact me at bonniereadsandwrites@gmail.com and I’ll get them up this week.
This Week’s Netgalley Reading
This week I plan to start A Home for the Lost by Sharon Maas and The Adoption by Jenna Kernan
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention a major activity for me this coming week. It’s NFL draft week, starting Thursday and ending Saturday. I’m a huge Bengals fan and I can’t wait to see who my team drafts. But another thing about the draft that I love is I get to see dreams come true for so many young men as they are chosen for a multi-million dollar job and start their professional football career. I never tire of seeing their families celebrate. During draft week, I never miss a moment and you will find me in front of the tv all weekend. But I will still post all my reviews!
