Book Review: The Ballad of Smallhope and Pennyroyal by Jodi Taylor

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Meet Lady Amelia Smallhope, for whom there is no problem that can’t be solved by a drink and a think.

And Pennyroyal, for whom there is no problem. Ever.

Everyone’s favorite bounty hunters. Sorry – recovery agents. No bad guy they can’t handle. No expense account too flexible. No adventure too outrageous.

Join them as they settle scores, break every rule in the book and take the world by storm.

Fasten your seatbelts. The timeline doesn’t know what’s hit it.

BOOK REVIEW

THE BALLAD OF SMALLHOPE AND PENNYROYAL explores the background of the mysterious recovery agents who have played important parts in both THE CHRONICLES OF ST. MARY’S and THE TIME POLICE series’. Their stories are both heartbreaking and inspiring, and I was absolutely riveted the whole time. As usual, birds provide some comic relief. In this case, it’s peacocks! The villain in this story is an absolutely evil woman, and I hated her appropriately. The motivations behind Pennyroyal and “why he is the way he is” make sense to me now.

Without giving spoilers, parts of this novel now have me furiously investigating past books in the series, looking for clues. It is also made clear how integral these two characters are to the plots of both series.

I started this book after breakfast and finished it the same day. I could not stop reading. It is not your usual St. Mary’s story, but it ties everything together and makes some big reveals. I loved that it covers the whole time period of The Chronicles of St. Mary’s, and more, while also telling Smallhope’s life story. Fans of this series will absolutely love this one.

I received a free copy of this book from Headline via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own. As I am a huge fan of Jodi Taylor, I also purchased a signed copy and pre-ordered the audiobook.

THE BALLAD OF SMALLHOPE AND PENNYROYAL will be released on September 12, 2024.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jodi Taylor is the internationally bestselling author of the Chronicles of St Mary’s series, the story of a bunch of disaster-prone individuals who investigate major historical events in contemporary time. Do NOT call it time travel! She is also the author of the Time Police series – a St Mary’s spinoff and gateway into the world of an all-powerful, international organization who are NOTHING like St Mary’s. Except, when they are. Alongside these, Jodi is known for her gripping supernatural thrillers featuring Elizabeth Cage together with the enchanting Frogmorton Farm series – a fairy story for adults. Born in Bristol and now living in Gloucester (facts both cities vigorously deny), she spent many years with her head somewhere else, much to the dismay of family, teachers, and employers, before finally deciding to put all that daydreaming to good use and write a novel. Over twenty books later, she still has no idea what she wants to do when she grows up.

2023 Year End Book Survey

This Year-End Survey was originally hosted by Jamie over at The Perpetual Page Turner.

This is an opportunity to look back over the year of reading and recall some of our favorites, and even some not-so-favorites. I’d love to see your answers to some of the questions in the comments

Here’s my 2023 Year-End Survey. If you click on the covers, it will take you to my reviews of the books.

2023 READING STATS

Number of books you read:  154

Re-Reads:

Most Popular Genre: For me it’s Historical Fiction.

BEST IN BOOKS

Best Book You Read In 2023? Kinfolk by Sean Dietrich

Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? The Exchange by John Grisham. Wow, what a disappointment! This was supposed to be the further adventures of Mitch McDeere from The Firm, but turned out to be a book that any character could have been plugged into. I felt like Mitch was used for sales and nothing more.

Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read? Fourth Wing. It has much stronger language than I usually read and too many sexual situations, so I was surprised that I loved it. But I loved it because: DRAGONS!

Favorite new author you discovered in 2023? Sean Dietrich. He’s not new, but new to me! He’s written over 30 books, and after reading Kinfolk, I plan to read everything he’s ever written!

SEAN OF THE SOUTH (Sean Dietrich’s Blog)

Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone? The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. I don’t read horror, and this was a cross between magical realism and horror, but it was beautifully written and also an important book because it was based on real-life murders of African American boys at a school that actually existed in Florida.

Most beautifully written book read in 2023? Also The Reformatory. Absolutely beautiful writing.

Most memorable character of 2023: Andarna in Iron Flame

Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2023 to finally read? Fourth Wing

Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2023? The shortest was 7 pages and the longest was over 800 pages.

Favorite Book You Read in 2023 From An Author You’ve Read Previously? The Good, The Bad, and the History by Jodi Taylor, the most recent book in her amazing Chronicles of St. Mary’s series (Not counting the Christmas short story, which was also amazing).

Best Book You Read In 2023 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure? Also FOURTH WING. I read it because everyone was RAVING about it. I loved it too.

Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read? Enola Holmes and the Mark of the Mongoose

The Enola Holmes books are so much fun. Enola’s quirky personality and her banter with Sherlock always make me smile.

Hidden Gem Of The Year? The Audiobook of Spare by Prince Harry. Listen for yourself as Harry reads it. Don’t rely on biased media accountings of what he said. He does an amazing job.

Most Unique Book You Read In 2023? Also Spare. The Audiobook of Spare was unique as it was read by a Prince and gave us more real insight into royal life than the tales spun by the media.

YOUR BLOGGING/BOOKISH LIFE

Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.) Other than a local author signing, I didn’t attend any events in 2023, but I plan to do that more, especially author signings.

Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2023? Went over 500 reviews on Netgalley. I also became a Co-Editor for Historical Novels Review, the magazine of the Historical Novel Society.  Was on the Book Bloggers Novel of the Year panel for the first time.

Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? The only challenge I really entered this year was the Goodreads Challenge, and I did complete that.

WWW Wednesday: What Are You Reading 12/27/23

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Taking On a World of Words.

The Three Ws are:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

CURRENT READ

This is the latest Eve Dallas. I’m only about halfway through, but it is COMPELLING. Teenagers are being murdered at clubs, and Eve is on the trail of the killer, who is injecting teens with a lethal substance while they dance, and then slipping away.

JUST FINISHED READING

I did a lot of reading while I was off for Christmas.

CHRISTMAS PIE is another Christmas Story by Jodi Taylor, who always releases a short story on Christmas Day. This is my favorite one ever! For the last several years I’ve enjoyed the Christmas tradition of reading Jodi’s latest story, and I thank her for that. My review is here.

THE WOMAN IN ME by Britney Spears should scare the crap out of you, especially if you don’t have trustworthy people in your life. My review is here.

CHARLIE HUSTLE by Keith O’Brien shares all the dark secrets about Pete Rose, who I still think should be in the Hall of Fame. This isn’t published until April, so my review will come later.

WHAT AM I READING NEXT?

Publisher’s Description:

As 1754 is drawing to a close, tensions between the French and the British on Canada’s Acadian shore are reaching a fever pitch. Seamstress Sylvie Galant and her family–French-speaking Acadians wishing to remain neutral–are caught in the middle, their land positioned between two forts flying rival flags. Amid preparations for the celebration of NoĂ«l, the talk is of unrest, coming war, and William Blackburn, the British Army Ranger raising havoc across North America’s borderlands.

As summer takes hold in 1755 and British ships appear on the horizon, Sylvie encounters Blackburn, who warns her of the coming invasion. Rather than participate in the forced removal of the Acadians from their land, he resigns his commission. But that cannot save Sylvie or her kin. Relocated on a ramshackle ship to Virginia, Sylvie struggles to pick up the pieces of her life. When her path crosses once more with William’s, they must work through the complex tangle of their shared, shattered past to navigate the present and forge an enduring future.

I will start this soon. I’m doing a blog tour for this book with Austenprose PR later this month.

Inspired by the true events of the most notorious evictions in Irish history…

1861, Donegal, Ireland

Ten years ago Declan Conaghan’s father died in the Great Famine, and since then, Declan has kept his promise to keep his family out of the workhouse. But all that is threatened with the arrival of new landlord, John Adair. Adair is quick to cause trouble and fear among his tenants. When he turns them off his land, Declan has no option but to break his promise…

Declan is in despair until he receives a letter from America offering him the chance of a new life and salvation for his family. But it would mean signing up to the US Army and fighting for Lincoln. Despite knowing nothing of war, or US politics, Declan leaves behind all he knows.

Set against the wild landscapes of Ireland and the turbulent times of the American Civil War, this sweeping narrative takes us on an epic journey to understand the strength and endurance of the human spirit.

This is the only book on my Netgalley shelf that is late, but I also picked up the audiobook and I’ll be listening to it soon.

UPDATE

Christmas was wonderful. I’m back to work, but luckily I can listen to audiobooks while I drive, and that helps me keep up with my reading. Looking forward to New Year’s and the Rose Bowl. ROLL TIDE!!!

Blog Tour: The Good, The Bad, and The History

Most of you who have been reading my blog for a while know that my favorite author is Jodi Taylor. When she has a new book out, I drop everything to read it. I was fortunate to get an advanced review copy of her latest book in the Chronicles of St. Mary’s Series, and my review is below. Because I love this series so much, I’ve also purchased the audiobook and I’m about to order a signed print copy from Jodi’s website. I’m such a fangirl. Check out my review below. I highly, highly recommend this series.

In the aftermath of the Director being shot, Max is once again on the run from the authorities, many of whom want to arrest her for any number of reasons. She reunites with former colleagues and, as usual, puts herself in danger, trying to save history from those who want to destroy it.

The Chronicles of St. Mary’s series follows a group of rowdy and hilarious, but caring, historians up and down the timeline as they “investigate historical events in contemporary time.” In other words–time travel–but don’t let Dr. Bairstow hear you say that. In this book, Max continues to deal with the physical effects of taking way too many time jumps for far too long while she tries to save history.

This is the fourteenth book in this wonderful series. If you are new to the Chronicles of St. Mary’s, I advise you to start with Book 1, Just One Damned Thing After Another, and read it from the beginning to get the best experience. And I envy you the experience of reading it for the first time.

Once again and for the fourteenth time, I laughed, gasped, and sometimes cried all over the timeline as I followed Max on her adventures. These characters have become dear friends and it’s so great to see them again and laugh at their shenanigans. Jodi Taylor has the most amazing ability to have the reader laughing one minute and crying the next. The uproarious ride throughout time is also a wonderful rollercoaster of emotions. There are surprises in this book. When I say you are going to gasp, I am not kidding. It’s another fabulous adventure with the St. Mary’s crew. I cannot stress enough how much I love these books, and I believe you will love them too.

Blog Tour and Book Review: A Catalogue of Catastrophe by Jodi Taylor–Historical Fiction Meets Science Fiction

BOOK DESCRIPTION

BOOK 13 IN THE INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING CHRONICLES OF ST MARY’S SERIES

For fans of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, Jasper Fforde and Doctor Who.

Finally – finally! – Max has that nice office job she’s always wanted. The one with no heavy lifting and no one tries to kill her. Well, one out of two’s not bad…

Punching well above their weight, Max and Markham set out to bring down a sinister organisation founded in the future – with a suspicious focus on the past.

Max’s focus is staying alive long enough to reunite with Leon and Matthew, alternately helped and hindered by St Mary’s. Who aren’t always the blessing they like to think they are.

But non-stop leaping around the timeline – from witnessing Magna Carta to disturbing a certain young man with a penchant for gunpowder – is beginning to take its toll. Is Max going mad? Or are the ghosts of the past finally catching up with her?

What people are saying about Jodi Taylor:

Once in a while, I discover an author who changes everything… Jodi Taylor and her protagonista Madeleine “Max” Maxwell have seduced me’

‘This amazing series is anything but formulaic. Just when you think you’ve got to grips with everything, out comes the rug from under your feet’

‘Addictive. I wish St Mary’s was real and I was a part of it’

‘St Mary’s stories are the much-anticipated highlight of my year’

‘Jodi Taylor has an imagination that gets me completely hooked’

BOOK REVIEW

Another wonderful, action-packed trip through history with the crew of St. Mary’s, a group of historians who “investigate major historical events in contemporary time. DO NOT call it time travel.” This is Book 13, and Max, while still working as a “recovery agent” along with Markham, finds herself with a new office job. She is also fighting strange symptoms that have started to happen whenever she does a time jump. This is not a standalone and the reader will benefit from beginning with Book 1, Just One Damned Thing After Another, and reading the series in order.

Whenever another St. Mary’s book is available, I drop everything to read it. The cast of characters is fun-loving, witty, and smart, and they go through events that are sometimes hilarious, often dangerous, and occasionally tragic. And there are always fascinating history lessons. In this installment, we learn about the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The past comes to vivid life, and our historians throw themselves right in the middle of it. Filled with humor, heartache, and history, this is a series that will leave you craving more. Fans will rejoice at this newest installment that heavily features Markham, a fan favorite. New readers of this series are advised to take a time jump to book one and start an adventure they will never forget. I envy those who get to read it for the first time. Whether it’s a laugh, a learning moment, or a punch in the gut, this series has everything.

I happily received a free print copy of this book from Headline via Netgalley. My review is voluntary and my opinions are my own.

#Book Review – Another Time, Another Place by #Jodi Taylor

UPDATE: Because Jodi Taylor has a new book (Book 13) in the Chronicles of St. Mary’s series coming out next month, I’m republishing my review of Book 12. As I say below, I drop everything to read the next Jodi Taylor book, and I will drop out of sight in April as soon as Book 13, A Catalogue of Catastrophe, is released. I usually get it read in one day. The thing I love most about Jodi’s books in this series is that they each come with many well-researched history lessons.

Whenever Jodi Taylor, my favorite author, publishes a book, I drop everything and read it. I also listen to the audiobook version. I currently have the Kindle version and the audiobook version of this new book already. A signed paperback is also winging its way to me right now. I’m a bit of a Jodi Taylor fangirl. However, I love her books, and historical fiction with a time travel subgenre is my favorite thing to read. She also writes in other genres and I love those series too. Check out my review below.

BOOK REVIEW

St. Mary’s is back, but in turmoil, and even more than usual. Max finds herself sacked (again), and her new job may be just what she needs. Markham has gone into the wind, fleeing shadowy government figures, and his replacement is not the sharpest pencil in the box. Clive Ronan is gone, but newer, maybe even deadlier, foes are waiting in the wings. More tumultuous changes occur, and it is uncertain if St. Mary’s will survive.

As always, the characters are well developed and interesting. The story is engaging and kept me on the edge of my seat. Max is outraged in this one, and an outraged Max cannot be missed. The history of the time periods visited is well researched and I always learn something new. I always drop everything to read the latest Jodi Taylor book, and I am never disappointed.

This is book 12 in the Chronicles of St. Mary’s series. It is important to read them in order. It is not a standalone. The St. Mary’s crew is a madcap, crazy group of time-traveling historians (don’t call it time travel) who “investigate historical events in contemporary time.” Anyone who is just starting this series needs to begin with the first book, “Just One Damned Thing After Another.” I envy you the experience of reading this series for the first time.

In addition to reading the Kindle edition, I also listened to the Audiobook, narrated by Zara Ramm. Zara does an outstanding job, as usual.

The Nothing Girl

Jenny, orphaned as a young girl, goes to live with her aunt and uncle. She has a pronounced stutter and is set aside as an afterthought by the family. While contemplating suicide at a young age, she is suddenly visited by a giant golden horse, and here Jenny’s life actually begins.

This is so well written. The characters just jump off the page, especially Jenny, Russell, and Thomas. Jenny, ignored all her life, begins helping Russell, who has been jilted by the love of his life, renovate his farmhouse. Nudged along by her faithful companion Thomas, the giant golden horse, Jenny begins to live again. There is a wonderful cast of characters, and of course there are pitfalls along the way, and the brilliant Jodi Taylor once again makes us laugh and cry as we cheer Jenny on.

I recommend this for anyone who enjoys a magical, heartwarming story.

Joy to the World

Oh how I love everything written by Jodi Taylor! This short story in the Frogmorton Farm series is no exception. You will laugh and cry.

There is a serious message in this short story about online predators, but there is also love, Joy, and a golden horse. Joy feels unappreciated and unloved by her father, Russell, and she feels her mother Jenny is weak and clueless. Her only friend is Tommy, a girl she met online. And that’s where the trouble starts…

I would suggest starting with the first book in this series, The Nothing Girl, so you will know the whole story of Jenny, Thomas, Russell, and more. In The Nothing Girl, Jenny is an orphaned girl who has a pronounced stutter. She lives a loveless life with her coldhearted aunt and uncle, until the arrival of a giant golden horse. This series is heartfelt and addictive. I love it so much that I want to go live at Frogmorton Farm.

I listened to the audiobook version of this story, read by Lucy Price-Lewis, who does a great job, especially with the voice of Thomas.

Since I am a huge fan of Jodi Taylor’s, I also recommend you read The Chronicles of St. Mary’s, about an organization of hilarious time-traveling historians, and The Time Police, a spinoff of that. Everything Jodi Taylor writes is amazing.

Hard Time

Another amazing book by Jodi Taylor! I truly enjoy everything she writes. Hard Time is the second book in The Time Police series, a spinoff of Taylor’s wildly popular Chronicles of St. Mary’s series.

A prominent politician has asked the Time Police to retrieve her spoiled daughter after an illegal time jump. Enter Matthew, Jane, and Luke (Team Weird), who are once again off on a chaotic and sometimes humorous adventure. And, as usual, they find more than they bargained for.

I continue to love reading about the adventures of this trio. Matthew is the son of Max and Leon from the St Mary’s series. He is a savant when it comes to the time map, but a little awkward in every other area. Jane was a victim of a lifetime of abuse, but continues to find her own way, and a new confidence is making its appearance. Luke is the disinherited, formerly spoiled, current playboy son of a powerful businessman. He has finally found something he cares about–Matthew and Jane. Follow this trio as they travel up and down the timeline–sometimes with permission, sometimes not. And the hilarious crew from St. Mary’s always makes an appearance.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of time travel fiction, or to anyone who just wants to read a well-written, often funny series with great characters. I also recommend that you check out the series from which it was born–The Chronicles of St. Mary’s by Jodi Taylor. The first book in the Chronicles of St. Mary’s is Just One Damn Thing After Another.

I received the novel early after ordering a signed copy from the author’s website. So far, and to the best of my knowledge, she has done this with every new release since she started her website.

Doing Time

I am writing this review of Doing Time, which came out last year, because the second book in this series, Hard Time, is winging its way to me in the mail as we speak. My review of Hard Time will be along soon. I must preface this review by saying Jodi Taylor has become my favorite author. Her St. Mary’s Chronicles is an absolute must for Time Travel (Sorry Dr. Bairstow) Fiction Readers. I would be remiss if I didn’t advise you to drop whatever you are doing and buy the first book in the St. Mary’s Chronicles, entitled Just One Damn Thing After Another. You will not be sorry, and I envy you the experience of reading it for the first time.

Doing Time is a spinoff of the St. Mary’s series and revolves around Matthew, son of two St. Mary’s main characters. Now that I’ve set this up and advised you to check out everything the brilliant Jodi Taylor has ever written, on to the review!

EDIT: My copy of Hard Time (Book 2 in the series) has been received. The review will be posted on 10/13//20. Hard Time will be released on 10/15/20.

************************************************************************************

Jodi Taylor has done it again. A spinoff of her wonderful St. Mary’s Chronicles, Doing Time is the story of Matthew, Jane, and Luke, trainees in the Time Police. Matthew is of course the son of Max and Leon from the St. Mary’s Chronicles. There is mystery, laughter, and intrigue all rolled up in one story as the trio (Team Weird) become Time Police cadets, and are faced with opposition from the Albayans. The Albayans are leftover followers of the late Colonel Albay, the former Time Police leader and unapologetic fascist, who killed first and asked questions later.

Beloved characters from St. Mary’s make an appearance and provide a lot of hilarity during some stressful times, and we learn a tiny bit about what is going on in Matthew’s head. I hope more will be revealed in subsequent books.

If you love Time Travel, history, and well written characters, you will LOVE these books.
