This is a sweet summer read about sisters, secrets, and the importance of loved ones. The story flowed so well I read it in one sitting. It is a story of two sisters who have endured separation, rejection, and loss due to the actions of their parents. This novel emphasizes the importance of family, with all its complications and flaws. Full of heartbreak and secrets, but also love and hope, When We Were Sisters shows us how the strings that bind us with our loved ones are still present, even across time and distance.

It’s Saturday, and I’ll be reviewing only Self-Published/Indie books all day. Saturday is exclusively Self-Published/Indie. Self-Published Saturday is my effort to help Indie authors market their books. As I always say, Self-Published/Indie authors have to do it all, from editing to cover design to marketing. My hope is that this feature will give them a little help. Please remember that if you decide to review the book, leave a review on Amazon, Goodreads, and anywhere else you review the book. This is so important for Self-Published authors. My first SP Saturday feature today is Village Teacher by neihtn, or Hien T. Nguyen. Village Teacher is a wonderful historical love story set in Vietnam.

Village Teacher by Neihtn, who also writes as Nguyen Trong Hien, is a well-written novel set in Vietnam in the late 19th or early 20th century while Vietnam was under French colonization. Teacher Tâm has traveled to the Imperial City of Hue to take the national examinations, challenging tests that help the country choose its leaders. He meets Giang, the daughter of a powerful Frenchman and a wealthy Vietnamese woman. The teacher becomes the student as Giang begins teaching him to write Vietnamese in Romanized script without using the Chinese characters. Outside forces begin to intervene in Tâm’s life in many ways, and the reader is taken on a journey through Vietnamese history, language, and customs as the Village Teacher and those who love him fight for his life and his rights.

This is such a beautiful historical love story. The author is an expert in Vietnamese history and I learned so much in this book. The struggles of Teacher Tâm are struggles that are being repeated even today as the wealthy and powerful try to hold down those of lesser means, especially the smart and talented. Over and over again we see in this book how some of the rich and powerful will use any means to try and destroy anyone who they believe threatens their total control. The love story is beautiful, and the reader gets a master class in Vietnamese history, language, and culture. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the history of Vietnam or anyone who just wants to read a well-written historical love story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nguyễn Trọng Hiền is originally from Vietnam. In the United States, he is known as Hien Nguyen, or Hien T. Nguyen.  neihtn is his Vietnamese first name (Hien)  and initials, spelled backward. Why backward? One reason is to indicate that he now lives on the opposite side of the world from where he was born and spent over two decades of his life.

Hein wrote Village Teacher at night and on weekends over four years while he worked a full-time job. He is now retired and spends his time writing and taking photographs of birds, wildlife, flowers and landscapes. He posts the photos on his blog,  Village Teacher. He also published another novel, The Siege of An Loc, in 2020. The Siege of An Loc shows us the Vietnam War through the eyes of a South Vietnamese soldier.

So recently I was commenting online about Self-Publishing, and a lady commented that Self-Publishing was the term for people who just want to write a book for family and friends, and the correct term for people who want to sell books is Indie Authors. I don’t know if she was being rude or if I should listen to her. Would you prefer Indie Saturday to Self-Published Saturday? I certainly don’t want people to think I’m not serious about promoting these books. Or is she wrong and I should just ignore her? Please vote in the poll and comment below. I want to do the best thing for Self-Published/Indie Authors.

About the Author


Julia Brewer Daily is a Texan with a southern accent. She has a B.S. in English and a M.S. degree in Education from the University of Southern Mississippi.

She has been an educator, Communications Adjunct Professor at Belhaven College, administrator, and Public Relations Director of the Mississippi Department of Education and Millsaps College, a liberal arts college in Jackson, MS.  She was the founding director of the Greater Belhaven Market, a producers’ only market in a historic neighborhood in Jackson, and even shadowed Martha Stewart.

As the Executive Director of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi (300 artisans from 19 states) which operates the Mississippi Craft Center, she wrote their stories to introduce them to the public. She is an adopted child from a maternity home hospital in New Orleans.

She searched and found her birth mother and through a DNA test, her birth father’s family, as well.  She lives on a ranch in Texas with her husband Emmerson and two Labrador Retrievers, Memphis Belle and Texas Star.

BOOK REVIEW

Set in a 1960s home for unwed mothers, No Names To Be Given is the story of three young women who gave up their children, and their lives after that. Becca is a wealthy white girl who falls in love with Zeke, who is black. The reaction of Becca’s family to their relationship and Becca’s pregnancy is shocking but very true to the time. Faith is the daughter of a famous Christian minister who is raped by one of her father’s employees. Sandy is an exotic dancer who gets pregnant by a married mobster. All three of them meet at Magnolia Home Hospital and become roommates.

The book follows the lives of all three women and their children. Each chapter has a changing point of view, but is not confusing. The writing is beautifully descriptive and the story is riveting and rich. I would recommend this novel to fans of stories about family and adoption.

The Secretary is another book I reviewed for the August edition of Historical Novels Review, the magazine of the Historical Novel Society.

In Germany in 1940, Magda has become Heinrich Himmler’s secretary. But all is not as it seems. By day she organizes glamorous and decadent parties for Nazi officials, and by night she smuggles secrets out of the office and helps others get to safety. Risking her life every day, she places her trust in very few people. However, an unsuspected source of betrayal is lurking in the background. In East Berlin in 1988, Nina finally gets her grandmother to talk about a beautiful drawing of a house that she found hidden away as a child. With her grandmother as a new ally, Nina attempts escape from East Berlin for both of them.

This is a heartrending dual-timeline novel that shows us the horrors in Germany in both Hitler’s 1940 and the Cold War years in late 1980s East Berlin. Two women, grandmother and granddaughter, risk themselves to help others. What ties it all together is a house and the secrets it holds. The descriptions of the differences between East Berlin and West Berlin at the time were fascinating. Self-Published Saturday: August 7, 2021/The Robin Hood Trilogy

This is my second Self-Published Saturday post of the day. As you know, self-published authors have to do their own marketing, and I hope with this feature to help spread the word about their books. This post features the amazing Robin Hood Trilogy, written by Olivia Longueville and J.C. Plummer. It is a new and captivating take on the characters from Robin Hood. Below are reviews of the three books individually, along with links to buy.

Book Reviews: The Robin Hood Trilogy

This is an amazing rendition of the Robin Hood legend that is steeped in history and expertly combines fictional characters with real figures from the past. The prologue and first chapter of the book focus on supporting history and setting up the story, but then the plot really gets moving, as Robin, unjustly accused of murder and stripped of his title and lands, becomes Robin Hood and fights for justice for himself and his people. Robin’s romance with Lady Marian is endearing, and the story of how he gathers together his band of men, led by Little John, is both thrilling and amusing. The ending is a fantastic shock. I was so glad I had book two already downloaded, because I couldn’t wait to read the rest of the story.

Robin Hood’s Widow was my favorite of the trilogy because Marian, and there is no other word for it, becomes a badass, butt-kicking heroine. After Robin’s death, Marian vows to avenge him and kill his murderer, Guy of Gisborne. Previously sheltered and protected, Marian really comes into her own as she assumes leadership of Robin’s band of men. Her clever wit enables her to devise various schemes to stop the evil Sheriff that even Robin would not have come up with.

The authors have outdone themselves with this cast of characters. The legend of Friar Tuck is reborn as Tuck, a skilled fighter and member of the Knights Templar. I truly loved this version of Tuck, who is a fresh and welcome change from the chubby monk who graces most of the versions of Robin Hood. Guy of Gisbourne’s backstory is revealed to us slowly, and is completely intriguing. Edmond and Constance are captivating supporting characters who play a big role. The big shock from Book 1 is that Robin is alive, but that is being kept secret by King Richard I (Lionheart) for reasons of military strategy. While Marian is fighting in his memory, Robin is on a mission for Richard, all the while thinking Marian has received word he is alive. The growth in Marian, the weaving in of historical figures, and the amazing cast of characters make this a must-read for fans of Medieval Historical Fiction and/or the Robin Hood legend.

This third book of the Robin Hood Trilogy finds Robin returning from the Holy Land only to find himself once again outlawed and stripped of his property, this time by Queen Eleanor. King Richard has been abducted and the ransom is high. When thieves begin to steal the additional taxes set up to pay Richard’s ransom, Robin is accused and returns to his outlaw past, with Marian at his side. This is the third and final installment of the Robin Hood trilogy. Once again, history meets legend in a thrilling conclusion full of action, intrigue, betrayal, and romance, as well as another surprise!

Once again, the cast of characters exceeds every expectation. The authors have given us a well-researched and thrilling take on a legend that is not to be missed.

My Overall Thoughts on The Robin Hood Trilogy

This series is what historical fiction should always be. It transports you to a time and place, teaches you something about that era, and inserts fictional characters that make the story sing. The fact that some of these characters are legends done in a different way make this even more impressive.

This is the newest edition of Self-Published Saturday, where I highlight self-published books and their authors. As you know, self-published authors have to do their own marketing, and I hope with this feature to help spread the word about their books.

Due to popular demand, I am changing Self-Published Saturday slightly. I am going to post more than one, and sometimes several, Self-Published Saturday features every Saturday. So this is the first of two Self-Published Saturday features I am putting up today. My first feature is Torn Between Worlds by Nancy Blodgett Klein. Told in diary form, it is a young adult story of immigration from Mexico to the US to Spain. As always, if you buy the book, please remember to leave a review. This is so important for self-published authors.

Torn Between Worlds is the life story told from the diary of Isabel, a nine-year-old girl who is taken by her father from Mexico to the United States, not through Customs, but through the desert in a trip arranged by a coyote. This young adult coming of age story takes Isabel from Mexico to the United States, back to Mexico, and then to Spain. Along the way, she relates historical events such as the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, deadly protests in Mexico, and the horrific 2004 Madrid train bombings. We are shown both Isabel’s daily life and world events through her diary, as her father takes her back to Mexico and she ends up going to Spain with her mother, who is fleeing prosecution in Mexico for her political activism. The author Nancy Blodgett Klein does a good job in this epistolary novel, as we see Isabel grow through her written voice from a 9 year old to a teenager, and then beyond. Although Isabel is a middle-grader for most of this story, I would recommend this only to young adults and above, as it contains very sensitive subject matter, such as violence and rape.

(In Her Own Words) Torn Between Worlds was my first novel while Life Lessons was my first non-fiction work. Both were published in 2021. I worked as a journalist for 15 years in Chicagoland, starting out as a police reporter in Chicago. I also worked for the American Bar Association Journal, writing hundreds of articles on political, social and legal topics. Later on I was a public school teacher, including to many students from Mexico. I now live in sunny Spain with my husband Rick. I received a bachelor’s from Tulane University in philosophy and a master’s in journalism from Boston University. Later, I earned a second master’s in education from Roosevelt University. A Dangerous Deal is an appealing Georgian romance that will keep you turning the page. Although it is the second book in a series, it can be read as a standalone. Lady Rachel Denby needs money, and Lord Arleigh has to marry to gain an inheritance. A marriage seems like a good business deal for both. But things aren’t always as they seem. The plot is engaging and true to the period, and the cast of characters is superb. The point of view changes between the characters, but it is not off-putting or confusing. The character development of our two protagonists is a wonderful revelation, as they start out in a cold business deal and grow from that point. Fans of Georgian romances will enjoy this second book in the Ladies of Worth series.
